Celebrate summer in Melbourne by visiting the most iconic night market in town, The Night Market or also known as Summer Night Market in Queen Victoria Market. The Night Market opens its door from 5pm-10pm every Wednesday, from 21 November to 20 March. With its grandeur exterior, the market provides multicultural experience. There are more than 60 global food stalls that offer taste of “mouth-watering” summer-style dishes and beverages.
The Cypriot Kitchen is one of the busiest vendors in the market selling their utterly delicious Mediterranean dish, chicken souvla and haloumi chips. If you’re a fan of Chinese soft bun, Wonderbao is also serving their Asian traditional bun with great varieties of meat and vegetarian menu. Their most selling buns are a package of two buns, and for only $15 you get beer battered fried chicken bao and roast pork belly gua bao. Do not feel left out if you are an Italian food lovers because That’s Amore Cheese will take your breath away with their signature dish, gnocchi sorrentina. This gnocchi is tossed through 40kg of grana padano wheel before serving. There are definitely more food stalls to try, serving from Korean charcoal barbecue, Polish dumplings, and Spanish paella to Jamaican jerk.
The market also packed with lined up performances from local musicians, bands and DJs’. Last Wednesday, 13 February, Melbournian jazz group, The Slip Dixies, was performing their 1920 &30 laid back blues on the market stage. Colombian group, Orquesta La45, was amongst the list and delivered their essence of Colombian street music. Another performance was by DJ Elle, with her electic mix of disco, adding contrasting nuances to the market.
Moreover there are merchandise stalls that sell vintage souvenirs, leather goods and many more. Located in the heart of Melbourne, summer night market is a perfect stop, not just for locals but also for tourist who wants to explore the glorious night market in town. (Shandra Clark)
